Geology students discovered how dust is impacting watersheds, air quality, and agriculture here in Utah

This year, groups of BYU geology students travelled into the High Uintas to collect water samples. Through further inspection of the samples, they've gained further insight into Utah's growing dust and drought problems.

Master’s student Sydney Richards conducted research in the Bahamas on island expansion vs. sea level rise

Sydney is a first-year graduate student in the Department of Geological Sciences at BYU. Her research uses ground penetrating radar (GPR) to understand carbonate beach depositional systems. In her Bahama research, she was able to determine that the Bahama islands are ideal for GPR imaging of strandlines. This is because they are assessable, produce high data quality, and do not have clastic.

Current Chair

Dr. Brooks Britt

Brooks Britt first came to BYU as an undergraduate student. After graduating with both his bachelor's and master's degrees in geology, he went on to get a PhD from the University of Calgary. He later returned to BYU as an associate professor and has taught and conducted research with his students for over 20 years. His research is focused on paleontology as well as sedimentology and stratigraphy.
