Jared Ward Returns to the Classroom After Olympics

Earlier this month, while many professors were putting the final touches on their fall syllabi, a statistics professor at Brigham Young University, Jared Ward, was crossing the finish line in the marathon at the Rio Olympics.

Mr. Ward, an adjunct professor, finished sixth in the final event. And now, after months of training and competition, he’s headed back to the classroom.

Though the new semester will bring fewer hours on the road and more in the classroom — this semester he’s teaching a course on programming for statistics software — running is never far out of Mr. Ward’s mind. He says he wants to contribute to his sport not only through Olympic feats, but also with his research.
