ABOUT MATHEMATICS TEACHER IDENTITY AND EQUITY

Students study various intangible aspects that influence the teacher-student relationship in mathematics classrooms. These aspects—including race, religion, and other social characteristics— affect the effectiveness of teachers while teaching and students while learning.

FACULTY

Douglas L. Corey

ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR

Dr. Corey's research compares mathematical instruction practices in the United States with those abroad. He also examines the relationship between a teachers mathematics knowledge and teaching effectiveness. Dr. Corey hopes to develop ways math teachers can improve their teaching.

Blake Peterson

PROFESSOR

Dr. Peterson researches ways that student teachers can optimize learning through teaching and student thinking instead of classroom management. Partially based on his observations of student teaching in Japan, Dr. Peterson and his colleagues have developed the concept of MOSTs (Mathematical Opportunities in Student Thinking). Dr. Peterson is currently chair of BYUs Mathematics Education Department.
