Preparing for the Future

The BYU College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences (CPMS) is pleased to announce Dr. Randall Barnes as this year’s speaker for the CPMS Honored Alumni Lecture on October 8.

This annual event gives BYU students and faculty the opportunity to learn from one of our alumni, whose wisdom was gained through years of professional experience.

Barnes has worked in the field of reproductive medicine since the practice of IVF began. His lecture, entitled “In Vitro Fertilization: Past, Present and Future,” also includes advice for BYU students who are trying to plan their futures as professionals.

“I never thought I would go into medicine. I always thought I’d be a chemist,” Barnes said. “It’s a good idea to be well prepared, whatever you’re studying. Be willing to accept the possibility that your plans may change.”

Barnes received his bachelor’s degree in chemistry from BYU in 1975, and he graduated from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1979. Since that time, he has published extensive research on in vitro fertilization and reproductive medicine, and he currently practices medicine at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

“It’s a tremendously rewarding experience, because families are so important to people,” Barnes said. “It’s nice to have some small part in helping many couples build their families.”

Barnes will be speaking at 11 a.m. on October 8 in room 1170 TCMB.
