Get ready to find out how cool chemistry really is—BYU is once again giving young students a chance to conduct their own captivating chemistry experiments at Open Lab Day!
The BYU chapter of the American Chemical Society, Y-Chem, will host Open Lab Day on Saturday, May 14 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Ezra Taft Benson Building (BNSN). All young scientists in elementary, junior high, and high school are invited to attend.
Open Lab Day began several years ago as an effort to help local students develop an interest in and curiosity about chemistry.
“It has really become an opportunity for people to experience the scientific process for themselves,” Alex Farnsworth, President of Y-Chem, said.
Attendees will have the opportunity to conduct hands-on experiments involving multicolored flames, hydrogen-oxygen rockets, and more.
In addition to carrying out their own experiments, students will be able to attend a chemistry magic show, savor some liquid nitrogen ice cream, and tour a research lab.
Farnsworth encourages all young students to get involved and participate.
“Haven’t you ever wanted to make a rocket? Haven’t you ever wanted to understand how medicines are made? If you have ever wanted to know anything like this, come and see how fun science can be,” Farnsworth said.
