Pi (π) may be an irrational number, but the celebration of Pi Day has become a tradition to rely on at BYU.

The Department of Mathematics will celebrate Pi Day on Monday, March 14, 2016. Festivities will include a pie eating contest, pi recitation contest, Pi Frisbee, face painting, a magician, Rubik’s Cube races, and a Pi walk, among other activities.

Clark Anderson set the record for pi recitation at BYU in 2014 at 2,448 digits. Hopeful contenders should start memorizing now.

In past years, students and faculty alike have gathered to observe Pi Day with extensive celebrations. Pi Day 2015 (3.14.15) was the date that most closely approximated pi in the last century, and the Department of Mathematics celebrated accordingly with a multi-day party that included opportunities to throw pie at professors and BYU rugby players.

Pi enthusiasts are invited to Brigham Square on March 14 from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. to show their affection for pi (and pie).
