Dr. Bryan Morse from the Computer Science department has accepted an appointment by Academic Vice President Shane Reese as an associate dean in the College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences. Effective immediately, Dr. Morse replaces Gus Hart who is now dean. He will attend to duties related to scholarship, faculty advancement, and grants.

“Bryan has a strong track record at BYU,” said Dean Gus Hart. “He has been a productive scholar and has served the university in many different capacities. I’m excited for the experience and enthusiasm he brings to this new assignment.”

Dr. Morse completed his bachelors and master’s degrees at BYU and his Ph.D. in computer science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He joined the BYU faculty as a professor of computer science in 1994 and has served as the department’s associate chair. His research focuses on computer, vision, machine learning, and computer graphics.

“My favorite assignments at BYU have been those that let me work with faculty from other departments and see their different perspectives,” said Bryan Morse. “I look forward to getting to know more of my colleagues from across the college.”

In addition to his role as a professor, Dr. Morse is a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the IEEE Computer Society, and the Association for Computing Machinery. He currently serves as chair of the IEEE Computer Society’s PAMI technical committee, an associate editor for IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence, and a member of the Executive Committee of the Computer Society’s Technical and Conferences Activities board. He recently received the Computer Society’s T&C Distinguished Leadership Award.
