Mentoring Network

The BYU Mentoring Network is an organization of distinguished alumni and friends of BYU’s College of Computational, Mathematical, and Physical Sciences. This organization aids the college's efforts to become “An Educational Everest”.

How Members Engage

Mentor – The primary focus of the Mentoring Network is to enhance the student experience by providing mentorship and supporting experiential learning opportunities. Members volunteer at the annual Student Research Conference (SRC), the largest STEM student research conference in the country. They create an account on our mentoring platform, BYU Connect, and participate in activities that help students explore and apply for internship and career opportunities. 95% of the work happens outside of formally organized meetings.

Advise – The Mentoring Network helps the college stay up on industry trends and connect with key professionals and organizations. Members of the Mentoring Network may also have opportunities to identify potential faculty candidates for new hires.

Donate – The Mentoring Network may assist with funding initiatives to support students in research and to provide scholarships and other forms of student aid. Many members donate regularly and become eligible to join the Deans Circle. The Mentoring Network strictly adheres to all BYU fundraising guidelines.

Mentoring Network Meetings*

1. October/November: Mentoring Match Party
2. Spring: Student Research Conference and Alumni Awards Banquet
3. Virtual: Video conferences as needed
*Note: Mentoring Network members are expected to attend these meetings at their own expense.

3 Year Volunteer Commitment

The first membership term is three years. Mentoring Network membership may be renewed based on interest and ability to fulfill roles outlined in these guidelines. Members who have made significant contributions during their term(s) of service will be granted emeritus status, recognizing their dedication to the college and its students.

Nomination Criteria

Members are selected for demonstrating the following qualities: leadership in their fields, willingness to accept Mentoring Network responsibilities, industry and geographic diversity, an affinity for BYU and the college, and professional and personal lives that reflect integrity and respect for the values of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Individuals are nominated by current Mentoring Network members or BYU faculty and administrators. Nominations should be sent to Monte_Marshall@byu.edu.

Selection Process

Mentoring Network candidates must be approved by the deans. Once approved, each nominee will be contacted by a member of the dean’s office for an informal discussion about membership and service. Following this discussion, a formal letter will be sent from the dean inviting the individual to join the Mentoring Network.
