Biography

Jeff Macedone is a Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Brigham Young University. Prior to joining the faculty, his stated dream job would be “a place where [he] could work with people as well as chemicals.” The courses he has taught so far are designed to help non-majors apply chemistry to their fields of study, which are typically large classes of 250 students. His initial exposure to science and Chemistry came from going to work with his father at the family electroplating and metal refinishing business. Jeff’s interests led to him to pursue a B.S. in Chemistry. Then, after completing graduate work in Analytical Chemistry and a post-doctoral fellowship, he accepted a faculty position in the Chemistry department at BYU in 2007. He is a member of the American Chemical Society, and serves in the local section leadership to help motivate local elementary and high school students towards science. Jeff is originally from the San Francisco Bay Area. He lives in Provo with his supportive wife (who he met in a chemistry class) and three children.

Teaching Interests

I love teaching chemistry because it models how we learn through the eternities. We are taught principles, then we are exposed to situations that require us to apply those principles. When I'm faced with a new chemistry problem to solve, and a acceptable solution is found, I feel joy. I appreciate the BYU focus on lifelong learning. I've loved delving in to the world of not only chemistry, but biology, photography, 3D printing, and the gospel of Jesus Christ.
